To know the battery voltage before charging, disconnect AC power, connect clips to battery (red clip to positive terminal and black clip to negative terminal) and switch on the unit. The displayed reading is the present voltage. Minimum battery voltgae should be 11Volts for proper charging. Then connect power plug and leave for charging. After full charge of about 14.4 volts the charger goes into tricle mode., then you can disconnect AC power.
