Ergonomics of Carrying Loads by Women in Hills

The book attempts to focus on the methodologies for carrying the ergonomic research on load carrying activities in systematic and concise manner and it investigates changes in the physiological responses and perceived exertion due to loads, modes, grades and environmental conditions, the most critical factors in the hill-women life. Generation of anthropometric data on hill women is required to develop appropriate technologies for their better health and well-being. This book also contains information regarding development of external frame backpack which was tested in the field and laboratory conditions. The developed L-shaped external frame backpack brought down the level of physiological cost and perceived exertion, and also did not cause any uncomfortability, pain in joints while carrying loads as reported by the hill women.

Dr. Vijay Shree Dhyani is teaching personnel (Department of Family Resource Management) College of Home Science, G.B.P.U.A.& T, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. She has been involved in research as a scholar during her M.Sc. and Ph.D. research. She has also developed external frame backpack for carrying loads by women of Uttarakhand.

Prof. Promila Sharma is Head, Department of Family Resource Management, College of Home Science, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttaranchal. She has been involved in research since 1983 and disseminated several technologies techniques through extension and research work.

Dr. T. C. Thakur is the ICAR National Professor, Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering. College of Technology, G.B.P.U.A.& T., Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. He was Commonwealth Scholar at the Cranfield Institute of Technology, England (U. K.) during 1981-85 to pursue his higher studies. He has over 38 years of experience in teaching, research and extension of various technologies. Dr. Thakur has published over 170 research papers/technical articles in National and International Journals. He has also published 16 research/extension bulletins and contributed to 18 books chapters. He is the recipient of many honours and awards because of his outstanding contributions in the field of Agricultural Engineering. Dr. Thakur has developed several types of innovative hill implements and farm machinery for plain regions which are being patented and commercialized. He is on the role of many esteemed organizations in the capacity of member and advisor.
