He is well regarded as having been one of the countrys greatest leaders, as well as one of its most brutal. By the time of his death in the late 16th century, after a life of continuous battle, he had succeeded in conquering one-third of Japan. Oda Nobunaga is well known as the initiator for the quest to unify Japan under shogun rule. His campaign for unification was succeeded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later realized by Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was a great supporter of culture, building large castles and gardens filled with tremendous works of art.
