The division of population into urban and rural components has appeared, perhaps, the most apparent and pervading. Any aspect of economy, society and developmental planning is essentially subjected to apparent dimensions of urban and rural. Accordingly, the literate-illiterate composition of regional population, like any other component of population, implies significant urban-rural distinctiveness. It is found that necessary differences in scale and rate of literacy as and when they are viewed in urban and rural perspectives. The urban segment always scores over the rural segment. The authors have realised this contextual essence and provide an elaborate interpretation of spatio-temporal vision and reality of literacy as qualitative attribute of population in the book. Dr. (Mrs.) Sneh Sangwan Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, BPSM Girls College, BPS Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Khanpur Kalan (Sonipat), has more than a dozen of research papers and books to her credit. She is a life member of several professional and academic bodies and has participated in more than 25 National and International conferences/seminars/ workshops. Dr. Sangwan was unanimously elected as Member of Executive Committee for the two consecutive terms (20032005 and 20062008) of National Association of Geographers, India (NAGI), which is the premier academic body for geographers of India. She has been awarded Major Research Project by UGC as Principal Investigator..
Dr. (Mrs.) Anju Dabas, is presently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography, Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Kharkhoda (Sonepat). She has one book and two research papers to her credit. She has participated in various conferences seminars workshops of National and Regional level.
Dr. Randhir Singh Sangwan, Professor, at present, working as in the Dept. of Geography, M.D. University, Rohtak, has more than a score of research papers and books to his credit. Prof. Sangwan has participated in more than 50 National and two International Conferences of IGU held at Glasgow, Scotland (Great Britain) and Tunis (Tunisia, Africa) in 2004 and 2008 respectively. Prof. Sangwan received “Prof. R.N. Dubey Memorial Award2002”—for Academic Excellence in Teaching and Research in Geography. This Award was conferred on by Bhoovigyan Vikas Foundation, the august body of Earth Science Professionals and was presented by the then His Excellency, Vice President of India. Dr. Sangwan also held the positions of Vice President and Member, Executive Committee of National Association of Geographers, India (NAGI), New Delhi.
