The symbol Ying Yang represents an ancient Chinese understanding of how things work. The outer circle represents "everything", while the black and white shapes within the circle represent the interaction of two energies, called "yin" or "ying" depending on dialect (black) and "yang" (white), which cause everything to happen. They are not completely black or white, just as things in life are not completely black or white, which is represented by the white spot in the black swirl and the black spot in the white swirl. Like all opposing forces, they cannot exist without each other.

There are many differing views on exactly what the "yin" and "yang" stand for. The most traditional view is that "yin" represents aspects of the feminine: being soft, cool, calm, introspective, and healing... and "yang" the masculine: being hard, hot, energetic, moving, and sometimes aggressive.
