A collection of short stories inspired by different Middle Eastern and European cultures, and derived from several historical periods, including World War I, World War II, the Cold War and the present day. It casts a light on such things as religious conflicts and social changes and includes stories based on actual and notorious court cases. The collection divides into three parts. The first or Baghdadi part is a collection of stories and anecdotes relating historically to a period starting with the last days of the Ottoman Empire just before World War I and ending with the social and political upheaval in the Middle East, resulting from the changes brought about by the war, the rise of nationalism, the founding of the State of Israel and its aftermath of conflict and mass population displacement. The second relates to the period of the Cold War and the political and social changes in Europe observed through the eyes of an engaged outsider. It includes a description of some leading political figures of the period. The third relates to the timeless topic of crime and punishment, justice and injustice. It includes sketches of some eminent judges and lawyers, and sheds a new light on some notorious cases, as well as providing answers to intriguing questions left in their wake, hitherto known to very few. These collected short stories, while not biographical, reflect the three phases of the authors life. The title is derived from the story of that title, which may be seen as an allegory of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
