The plant has its origin in India but now it is abundantly found in the tropical areas of India, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. This climbing herb is found throughout India especially in the dry forests. It is a wild shrub and does not often require harvesting. It grows on its own and is often found clinging to the large trees. However it mostly grows on mango or neem trees. In India it is also seen climbing even on the electric or telephone poles in many rural areas.
It has grey-brown or creamy white dotted corky bark. The leaves are simple and membranous and are heart shaped. The flowers are also small yellow or green-yellow in color. The fruits are red when they ripe and have only one seed. It has slender, long aerial roots.
Scientific name
The scientific name of the herb is Tinospora cordifolia and it is herbaceous vine belonging to the Mernispermaceae family. The active constituents of the herb are polyphenols, diterpene compounds, polysaccharides and polysaccharide.
