Brinjal / Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is a delicate, tropical perennial often cultivated as a tender or half-hardy annual in temperate climates. It grows 40 to 150 cm tall, with large, coarsely lobed leaves. The stem is often spiny. The flower is white to purple. The fruit shaped glossy black/white/green fruit has white flesh with a meaty texture. The Brinjal grows very easily and is a very low maintenance vegetable to cultivate. They are an asset to any garden and make excellent accent plants because of the pretty purple flowers and bright, shiny fruit, contrasting with the green foliage. About half a dozen of Brinjal plants should provide enough for the averaged size family.
Planting information:
Mix of two parts potting soil and one part sand with a little compost and 5-10-5 fertilizer into the soil. Eggplants need well-drained sandy loam garden soil.
Fill your small pots with potting mix loosely. Poke a 1/2-inch (1 1/4-centimeter) hole in the center of each pot. Place two seeds in each hole. Cover the seeds with additional potting mix loosely. Set the pots out on a warm, sunny windowsill where it receives direct sunlight for at least 8 hours a day. Eggplants require temperatures of 55 degrees Fahrenheit (12.8 degrees Celsius) or higher.
Water your seeds to keep the soil moist all times, but do not supersaturate. The seeds should germinate and plants will emerge in about 7-10 days, depending on the soil temperature and the depth they are covered when planted.
In growing season water your eggplant daily In hot, dry weather. Use a water soluble 5-10-5 fertilizer and water your eggplant before adding it to the soil.
Your eggplant will usually be ready for harvest within two or three months after you initially planted your seeds. Harvest your eggplants once the skin looks glossy.
