Information on General Powerbank

 

The below explanation is for illustrative purpose and do not consider as accurate outcome of the product. The results may vary from mobile to mobile of same model depending upon mobile battery health and usage pattern. The conversion efficiency quoted is for illustrative purpose only and not the actual figures. Why a power bank, whose typical capacity is the same or slightly higher than phone's one, can't fully charge a phone ?

 

This question confused many customers. Here is an explanation with iPhone4 as an example

 

First, we have to clear a concept: when the power device works,  "energy" is transfered, rather than so-called "capacity".

 

Secondly, the voltage for charging iPhone4 is 5.0V. In other words, the output voltage of power bank need to be 5.0V. However, the typical voltage of lithium batery is 3.7V. So, when the power bank charges iPhone 4 , the energy of battery is doing two conversions of "3.7V ~ 5.0" and "5.0V ~ 3.7V" .

 

Third, assume that there is no energy loss when power device works,  a power bank, whose typical capacity is the same as iPhone4's, can fully charge one iPhone4.

 

However, in fact, all the power device at work will have a energy loss. This refers to an energy conversion efficiency. For power bank and other devices like this, the energy conversion efficiency is around between 85% and 92%". In addition, there are also an energy loss when the built-in battery of iPhone4 charges the device. At the same time, there is also a consumption for standby power. General speaking, the energy efficiency is about "80% to 90%" when the power bank charges iPhone4.

 

For example: a power bank with typical capacity of 1800mAh charge iPhone4

Fully stored energy of power bank (appr.): 1800mAh * 3.7V = 6660mWh;

Typical capacity of iPhone4: 1470mAh;

Energy for fully charging iPhone4  (appr.): 1470mAh * 3.7V = 5439mWh;

For power bank, to take the middle value of "89%" as its energy conversion efficiency

Then, its output energy (appr.): 6660mWh * 0.88 = 5808mWh;

So, the actual energy for IPhone4 (appr.) is: 5808mWh;

For iPhone4, to take the middle value of "85%" as its own energy conversion efficiency

Then, the energy that its built-in battery got (appr.): 5927.4mWh * 0.85 = 4936.8mWh;

Finally, charging rate for iPhone4 : 4936.8mWh / 5439mWh * 100% = 90.8%

These are calculated for iPhone4, and other products can be done in the same manner.

To sum up, we remember one thing: when the power device works,  "energy" is transfered, rather than so-called "capacity". In this process, there is energy loss. The only difference among products is how much energy lost.
